Cure for Cancer? New treatment 100% successful in mice

Scientists at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center are about to embark on a human trial to test whether a new cancer treatment will be as effective at eradicating cancer in humans as it has proven to be in mice. The treatment will involve transfusing specific white blood cells, called granulocytes, from select donors, into patients with advanced forms of cancer. A similar treatment using white blood cells from cancer-resistant mice has previously been highly successful, curing 100 percent of lab mice afflicted with advanced malignancies.Zheng Cui, Ph.D., lead researcher and associate professor of pathology, will be announcing the study June 28 at the Understanding Aging conference in Los Angeles. The study, given the go-ahead by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will involve treating human cancer patients with white blood cells from healthy young people whose immune systems produce cells with high levels of cancer-fighting activity.

ScienceDaily (June 27, 200 — It has long been known that the first backboned land animals or "tetrapods" - the ancestors of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including ourselves - evolved from a group of fishes about 370 million years ago during the Devonian period. However, even though scientists had discovered fossils of tetrapod-like fishes and fish-like tetrapods from this period, these were still rather different from each other and did not give a complete picture of the intermediate steps in the transition.

In 2006 the situation changed dramatically with the discovery of an almost perfectly intermediate fish-tetrapod, Tiktaalik, but even so a gap remained between this animal and the earliest true tetrapods (animals with limbs rather than paired fins). Now, new fossils of the extremely primitive tetrapod Ventastega from the Devonian of Latvia cast light on this key phase of the transition.

The Beginning of the End of the Wall Street Journal

Was anyone ever in doubt that, despite his claims to the contrary, Rupert Murdoch would gut the WSJ and staff it with editors that would add it to his right-wing shouting box? The WSJ was once a respected conservative publication, the natural counterpart to the left-leaning New York Times. While certainly many or most did not agree with the WSJ's positions, they were at least thought of as an honest good-faithed counter argument. Fox News, the Washington Times, and Murdoch's other news outlets are generally a laughing stock in the news industry, and to see the WSJ join their ranks is bad for America and bad for Republicans. After all, Fox News shrieking and patriotism tossing was part of the reason Bush was able to invade Iraq. With the entire right-wing walking in lock-step whichever direction the top shouts, we won't be able to have an honest discussion and the ends can only be unfortunate.

Asian and European honeybees can learn to understand one another's dance languages despite having evolved different forms of communication, an international research team has shown for the first time. The findings are published this week in the journal PLoS ONE.

The research team is the first to successfully study the behaviour of a colony containing a mixture of two different species of bees. One of the first findings of this novel approach was that Asian and European honeybees, after some time of adjustment in the mixed colony, could share information and work together to gather food. Asian honeybees followed the dances of European forager bees, and deciphered the encoded information correctly.
